Body Love and Acceptance: What Does It Mean?

By Belldon Colme

In recent years, the Body Positive Movement has gained significant traction. It encourages people to accept their bodies as they are, rejecting unrealistic beauty standards and promoting self-esteem. While these principles are important, there’s another layer to body love and acceptance that often gets overlooked. True body love involves not just acceptance but also the desire to care for and improve your body.

The Body Positive Movement has done wonders for many individuals, helping them embrace their bodies and build self-confidence. It challenges harmful societal norms and encourages acceptance of all body types. This movement is a powerful force against body shaming and promotes a healthier self-image.

However, when we think about how we love anything else in our lives—be it our pets, our homes, or our loved ones—acceptance is just the beginning. True love involves nurturing, protecting, and working to make things better. The same should apply to our bodies.

My First Car: A Lesson in Love and Improvement

When I was in high school, my first car was a 1964 ‘Stang. I loved that car. It was rusty, the engine didn’t run very well, and the interior was beat up. But it didn’t matter, I really LOVED that car.

Because I loved that car so much, I took an auto mechanic class in high school and an auto body class in junior college to make her look better, get her engine purring like a kitten, and restore her interior to better-than-new condition.

I helped her become everything she was meant to be because I loved that car. I never would have done all of that if I didn’t love her so much.

Loving Your Body Through Care and Improvement

Loving your body means providing it with the right nutrients, exercise, and care it needs to thrive. It’s not just about how your body looks but about how it feels and functions. The 4 Jars Path to a Naturally Healthy, Beautiful You is an excellent example of balanced nutrition that respects your body’s needs. It’s about getting the right things in, keeping the wrong things out, and achieving the correct balance.

Physical activity is also crucial in maintaining a healthy body and mind. It’s about finding joy in movement and recognizing that moving is a form of self-care, not punishment. Whether it’s a daily walk, a dance class, or a yoga session, moving your body in ways that feel good is a testament to self-love.

Acceptance and Action: A Holistic Approach

True body love involves loving where you are now while also striving to improve. It’s about balancing self-acceptance with the motivation to make positive changes. Here are a few tips on how to practice this holistic approach to body love and acceptance:

  • Listen to Your Body: Pay attention to how your body feels and what it needs. Rest when you’re tired, eat when you’re hungry, and move in ways that feel good.
  • Nourish Your Body: Focus on eating a balanced plate that provides the nutrients your body needs to thrive. The 4 Jars Path is a great place to start.
  • Move with Joy: Find physical activities that you enjoy and that make you feel good. Exercise should be a celebration of what your body can joyfully do, not a chore or an experience in pain.
  • Practice Self-Compassion: Be kind to yourself and love yourself. Accept that you’re on a journey and that it’s okay to have ups and downs.
  • Set Realistic Milestones: Focus on small, achievable shifts that help you make steady progress towards your best you.

The Power of Self-Love

You HAVE to stop hating yourself and start loving yourself FIRST, or else you will never do the work to become who you want and deserve to be. You will not care for something you hate. Conversely, you absolutely WILL artistically sculpt something you love into the best version of itself you know how to make it.

True body love is about embracing both acceptance and improvement. It’s about caring for your body because you love it, not in spite of it. Join us at Club LIT for more guidance and support on your journey to loving and caring for your body in a holistic way.
